1. I don't care how simple the stepchart is. 400bpm is too fast for me to be able to sight-read and complete the song on the first try.

2. I don't yet have the stamina to complete a 10-footer.

3. Nine-footers take some practice.

4. Practice helps a lot.

5. Courses are a lot more intense than doing the songs separately.

6. Some of the people who write these stepcharts are professional sadists.

7. This game is a lot of addictive fun.

I'm working on DDR SuperNOVA right now. I've unlocked all the songs except the red ones and all the courses up through Boss Rush 1. I'm working my way through the courses to test [livejournal.com profile] neko_san's hypothesis that playing all the courses lets you buy Endless Mode. It's good exercise. There are also a few songs that are just plain fun. Matsuri (J-Summer mix) and Tino's White Horse are in that category.

It is absolutely hysterial that you posted this now. I just sat down to read while I cooled down from my first DDR run after a few months away. MAN have I lost stamina. But it's good for the soul.

I really need a new game, though. DDR Extreme 2 is fun, but I've memorized all the music. Not necessarily the STEPS, mind you, but the songs. I was topping out at 7 feet. Now I have to back off to 6 to keep my lungs from exploding. But, hey.

New game? I gotcher new game right here. Several of them, in fact: take your pick!. I'll put them in my back and bring them to lunch tomorrow.

Clearly my brain is addled. I'll put them in my bag, not my back. I probably meant backpack.

Oh, another silly complaint: the announcer does not sound nearly enthusiastic enough when he announces an eight hundred combo. He should be tasered into some semblance of aliveness.

I didn't even notice until you pointed it out. I visualized some carrier that went on your back :).

Man, you kill me. I think my highest combo is 250.

Oh, you rock so hard.

I've been wanting to check out Extreme I. Eventually, we'll buy superNOVA :).

Simple questions

For those of us who've never done DDR (I saw [livejournal.com profile] suhl do it at a party at her house once, but that's all), what are 9 and 10 footers?

Songs are rated by difficulty. They're assigned a label -- Beginner, Light, Standard, Heavy, Challenge -- and a number of feet from 1 to 10. Each song will have different sets of steps for Light, Standard and Heavy. Most, in newer releases, also have a Beginner chart. A few have Challenge stepcharts as well. A very few have only Challenge steps.

Beginner difficulty is always 1-2 feet. Light can be anywhere from 1 to 6 depending on the song. (I think I may have seen one at 7 but I could be wrong.) Standard will usually be 4-6 with the occasional 7 and rare 8. Heavy and Challenge go from 7-10. 10 is as high as the difficulty goes and believe me, it's hard. The song in the video you posted is easy by comparison. He's playing it in Heavy mode, which is a 9-foot stepchart.

Does that help?
