(smile) You know, my father used the same example to describe life when I was a little boy. And I always did consider my father very wise. As I do you.

It's an especially apt description of the life of a physician -- Pre-med as the all-or-nothing, do-or-die run at the pole, the race you give everything you humanly can to because if you don't get in the race, you have nothing. And once you've made it to the race itself, then comes the long, long haul.
